Instructions
1
Place the sugar cube in an Old Fashioned glass. Add the bitters directly onto the sugar cube.
2
Muddle the sugar cube and bitters together until the sugar is mostly dissolved. Add a splash of water if needed to help dissolve the sugar.
3
Add a large ice cube (or several smaller ones) to the glass.
4
Pour the whiskey over the ice and stir gently for about 30 seconds to combine and chill the drink.
5
Express the orange twist over the drink by squeezing it to release the oils, then rub it around the rim of the glass and drop it in.
6
Garnish with a maraschino cherry and serve immediately.
Chef's Tips
- Whiskey Choice: Use a high-quality bourbon or rye whiskey for the best flavor. Bourbon will give a sweeter taste, while rye offers more spice.
- Sugar Alternatives: If you don't have a sugar cube, granulated sugar or simple syrup can be used as substitutes.
- Ice Matters: A large ice cube melts slower, preventing the drink from becoming too diluted.
- Bitters Variations: Experiment with different bitters like orange or walnut for unique flavor profiles.
- Glassware: Always use an Old Fashioned glass (also known as a rocks glass) for authenticity.
- Stirring: Stir gently to avoid over-diluting the drink while still ensuring proper mixing.
