Instructions
Wash and quarter the apples (no need to peel or core). Place them in a large pot.
Add the orange slices, brown sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice, and nutmeg to the pot.
Pour in the water, ensuring all ingredients are submerged. Bring to a boil over high heat.
Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
After simmering, use a potato masher to gently crush the softened apples to release more flavor.
Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean pot or pitcher, pressing to extract all liquid.
Serve warm. Garnish with additional cinnamon sticks or orange slices if desired.
Chef's Tips
- Apple Selection: Use a mix of sweet (like Fuji or Gala) and tart (like Granny Smith) apples for balanced flavor.
- Spice Control: Place whole spices in a cheesecloth bundle for easy removal after cooking.
- Sweetness Adjustment: Add more or less brown sugar based on your preference and apple sweetness.
- Storage: Refrigerate for up to 1 week or freeze for longer storage.
- Adult Version: Spike with rum, bourbon, or brandy for a festive cocktail.
- Slow Cooker Option: Cook on low for 6-8 hours for deeper flavor development.
