Instructions
Combine ingredients: In a large pot, pour the red wine and add orange slices, honey (or sugar), cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise, nutmeg, and ginger.
Heat gently: Place the pot over low heat and warm the mixture slowly. Do not let it boil, as high heat will evaporate the alcohol.
Simmer: Let the wine simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally to dissolve the honey or sugar and infuse the spices.
Add brandy (optional): If using brandy, stir it in just before serving for an extra kick.
Strain and serve: Use a fine-mesh strainer to remove the spices and orange slices. Pour the mulled wine into heatproof glasses or mugs.
Garnish: Optionally, garnish each serving with a fresh orange slice or cinnamon stick for presentation.
Chef's Tips
- Wine Choice: Use a medium-bodied red wine like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon for the best flavor.
- Sweetness Control: Adjust honey or sugar to taste—some prefer it less sweet.
- Slow Heat: Avoid boiling to preserve the alcohol content and prevent bitterness.
- Make Ahead: Let the spices steep longer for a deeper flavor, then reheat gently before serving.
- Non-Alcoholic Version: Replace wine with grape juice and simmer with the same spices.
