Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
Place the cubed bread in a large mixing bowl. If using raisins, mix them in with the bread.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
Pour the milk mixture over the bread cubes. Gently stir to ensure all the bread is soaked. Let it sit for 10 minutes to absorb the liquid.
Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish. Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the top.
Bake for 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set. Let it cool slightly before serving.
Chef's Tips
- Bread Choice: Use day-old or stale bread for best results. Brioche, challah, or French bread work wonderfully.
- Soaking Time: Letting the bread soak for 10 minutes ensures a custardy texture. Don’t skip this step!
- Flavor Boost: Add a splash of bourbon or rum to the milk mixture for an adult twist.
- Serving Suggestion: Serve warm with a drizzle of caramel sauce or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
- Storage: Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.
