Instructions
Rinse the cranberries under cold water and discard any soft or spoiled ones.
In a medium saucepan, combine water, sugar, orange zest, orange juice, cinnamon stick, and salt. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
Add the cranberries to the saucepan and return to a simmer. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries burst and the sauce thickens.
Remove the cinnamon stick and let the sauce cool slightly. It will continue to thicken as it cools.
Taste and adjust sweetness if needed by adding more sugar or a splash of orange juice.
Transfer to a serving bowl and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving for best flavor.
Chef's Tips
- Freshness Check: Use plump, bright red cranberries for the best flavor and texture.
- Sweetness Adjustment: Add honey or maple syrup as a natural sweetener alternative.
- Spice It Up: A pinch of nutmeg or cloves can add warmth to the sauce.
- Texture Preference: For a smoother sauce, blend briefly with an immersion blender.
- Make Ahead: This sauce can be made up to 3 days in advance and stored in the fridge.
