Instructions
Slice the tomatoes: Wash and dry the tomatoes. Slice them into 1/4-inch thick rounds.
Slice the mozzarella: Drain the mozzarella if it’s packed in water. Slice it into rounds similar in thickness to the tomatoes.
Arrange the salad: On a serving plate, alternate slices of tomato and mozzarella, slightly overlapping them in a circular or linear pattern.
Add the basil: Tuck fresh basil leaves between the tomato and mozzarella slices. You can also chiffonade the basil and sprinkle it on top.
Drizzle with olive oil: Generously drizzle extra virgin olive oil over the arranged salad.
Season and finish: Sprinkle with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Drizzle with balsamic glaze just before serving.
Chef's Tips
- Tomato Selection: Use ripe, in-season tomatoes for the best flavor. Heirloom tomatoes work particularly well.
- Mozzarella Tip: For the creamiest texture, use fresh mozzarella di bufala if available.
- Presentation: Arrange the salad on a large platter for a beautiful, shareable dish.
- Balsamic Glaze: If you don’t have balsamic glaze, you can reduce balsamic vinegar by simmering it until it thickens.
- Serving Suggestion: Serve with crusty bread to soak up the delicious olive oil and balsamic glaze.
