Instructions
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook ziti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat, breaking it into small pieces. Drain excess fat, then add minced garlic, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Stir in marinara sauce and simmer for 5 minutes.
In a bowl, mix ricotta cheese, 1 cup mozzarella, Parmesan, and egg until well combined.
In a large baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce. Add half the cooked ziti, then spread the ricotta mixture evenly. Top with remaining ziti and the rest of the meat sauce.
Sprinkle remaining mozzarella cheese on top. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 10 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden.
Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil if desired.
Chef's Tips
- Pasta Tip: Undercook the ziti slightly since it will continue cooking in the oven.
- Cheese Variations: Substitute cottage cheese for ricotta if preferred.
- Vegetarian Option: Replace ground beef with sautéed mushrooms or spinach.
- Make Ahead: Assemble the dish a day ahead and refrigerate. Bake when ready to serve.
- Freezing: Baked ziti freezes well. Reheat in the oven for best results.
