Instructions

1

Mash the black beans in a large bowl until mostly smooth but with some chunks remaining for texture.

2

Add quinoa, grated carrots, chopped onions, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, soy sauce, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper to the bowl. Mix well until combined.

3

Form the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties, about 1/2 inch thick. Place on a plate and refrigerate for 15 minutes to firm up.

4

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for 4-5 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy.

5

Toast the whole wheat buns lightly in the same skillet or in a toaster.

6

Assemble the burgers with lettuce, tomato, and avocado slices. Serve immediately.

Chef's Tips

  • Binding Tip: If the mixture is too wet, add more breadcrumbs. If too dry, add a tablespoon of water or flax egg.
  • Make Ahead: Patties can be formed and refrigerated for up to 24 hours before cooking.
  • Grill Option: These burgers can also be grilled for a smokier flavor.
  • Freezing: Cooked patties freeze well for up to 3 months. Reheat in oven or skillet.
  • Sauce Ideas: Try with vegan mayo, mustard, or a tahini sauce for extra flavor.
